Erin & Maggie (2021)
Erin & Maggie is a short stop-motion film I put together as a gift for my best friend, Erin Choi, as an ode to our love of crafting and spending time together. This was completed as my final project during the first semester at CalArts as a BFA1 in Experimental Animation. I built, animated, and edited all the visual aspects of the film, while HUMBERT, a good friend of mine, did the music and sound design.
Behind the Scenes
The puppet building was a four day process and starts with concept art, then the armature, building up the insides, covering her in felt, then clothes and final touches. The facial features are painted epoxy and stick to the face with wax.
After the wire armature is made, I covered her in athletic tape, foil, epoxy, and masking tape.
I sewed felt around the arms, legs, fingers and neck.
A close up of her face showcasing an alternative expression!

Before
After
The magic of post production! This was edited using Photoshop and After Effects to take out my hand that was in shot (you can see it in the lower right corner) and for color correction/ final rendering.
To keep with the craft feel I opted to use scrapbook paper for the walls and a bunch of my mom’s buttons/ findings from her scrapbooking days. I made the garland using thread and beads I found on sale at Michaels, then drew the painting in the background. The two smaller ones are scrap paper covered in stamps.
